The ugly “kiasu”

September 1, 2006

Kiasu literally means "scared to lose" in the Hokkien dialect. It is a trait peculiar to Malaysian and is on the rise in Malaysia. Take a look at this.

Rush for passport in Penang via theStar on August 29, 2006.

No increase in passport fees, says department via theStar on August 30, 2006 and as if the assurance from Immigration Department is not convincing enough.

This is what happened, No more application till Sept 7 via theStar on August 31, 2006.

I just can’t believe it. Just because of a rumour mongering about the possibility of Malaysian passport fee increase from RM300 to RM500 for a 32-page and from RM600 to RM1,000 for a 62-page, thousands have thronged the Immigration Dept to "beat" the deadline of the purported increased fee.

Oh yes, I notice that this happened only at the northern States (Kedah, Penang and Perak). I wonder why, eh?
