Hazy Spell, the Oxidative Stress

July 22, 2006

NOT again. The dreadful HAZE!! I hate it. It aggravates Big J’s asthma, irritates my eyes and causing a comeback for my migraine. And it forces me to ban outdoor activities for my 2 beloved Js. Air pollution is a major cause of oxidative stress in our lungs and bodies, according to Dr. Ray Strand. When we are exposed to this toxins day in and day out, they will have a major effect on our health. It has been implicated in the causes of asthma, chronic bronchitis, heart attacts and even cancer!

The funny thing is that they (you know who I mean) are not sensationalizing it in major newspapers. Ohh..that bit about Datuk K and Siti is more profiteering to the editors, even the unfortunate tsunami in Indonesia which happened on the day the celebrity couple announced their nuptial knot were not given prominent coverage. Can’t blame the editors, after all, gossips sell better. Or maybe once API reaches hazardous level, then this piece of news will earn a space on the front page.

In today’s news, published on a tiny-weeny column says that the Haze has been cleared. But my eyes and my nose is telling me a different story, I can even taste it!!. Blame it on Indonesia forest fires, but local authorities or the DOE have to do their part to curb open burning. My family and the whole of Kota Kemuning folks and the adjacent communities have been enduring these lungs-damaging air for years. And I swear that it is from local source, the open burning by some irresponsible son of b****. And each time the authorities would say, the air quality is still under healthy level! We can choose the food we want to eat, we can choose the beverages we want to drink, but we just can’t choose the air we want to breathe in.

And can you believe it? If you do a google search on Haze, Wikipedia defined haze by giving our "beautiful" KL scenery as an example. That is how infamous KL is for Haze! Unbelieveable! or should I say, what a shame!!
